Gondogoro La Crossing

The pass that turns a trek into a story.

Gondogoro La (5,585 m) links Concordia's glacier world to the green Hushe valley over a single crampon-and-fixed-line pass, exiting the K2 trek without retracing the Baltoro. The summit-dawn view — Laila Peak's blade with K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums arrayed behind — is widely called the finest in the Karakoram.

The crossing is real mountaineering-lite: a 02:00 start, two to three roped hours on snow slopes, then a long scree descent into another climate. Rescue teams position on both sides in season, and our ratio doubles for the pass day.

What you earn is the exit itself: Hushe's willows and apricots after two weeks of ice, Khaplu Palace's hot water two days early, and the only skyline photograph in which Laila Peak consents to look real.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do I need prior crampon experience for Gondogoro La?

Prior use helps but isn't mandatory — we run a skills hour at Concordia and the pass day is fully rope-managed. Genuine fear of exposure, however, is disqualifying; the east side is steep and psychological.
