Shigar Fort — Fong-Khar, 'palace on the rock' — is a 17th-century raja's residence restored by the Aga Khan Trust into a 20-room Serena heritage hotel and museum, 32 km from Skardu. It is the most atmospheric stay in northern Pakistan and anchors SafarGB's Baltistan itineraries.
The restoration won global awards for a reason: nothing feels museum-roped even though everything is museum-grade. Carved poplar columns, the living boulder the palace grips, orchard courtyards where dinner arrives under strung lights — it rearranges what 'hotel' means.
Non-residents can tour the museum wing; residents get the fort after the day visitors leave, which is when it performs. Our itineraries always include at least one night.

Is staying at Shigar Fort worth the premium?
It's the difference between seeing Baltistan and briefly living in it. Rooms are limited (about twenty) and June–August sells out months out — the premium is real, and so is the memory.
