Sarfaranga Cold Desert

The bigger, emptier white desert across the Indus.

Sarfaranga is the larger cold-desert expanse on the Shigar road across the Indus from Skardu — a plain of pale dunes framed by the Shigar valley walls, home to Pakistan's high-altitude jeep rally each year and far emptier than Katpana on any given evening.

Where Katpana is a pocket, Sarfaranga is a landscape — long dune trains running toward the Shigar river's jade bend. It's the desert for wide lenses and for anyone who wants their footprints to be the only ones in frame.

Getting there

On the Skardu–Shigar road, ~25 min from town; every SafarGB Shigar transfer can pause here as long as the light deserves.

FAQ

Questions, answered

When is the Sarfaranga jeep rally?

The Cholistan-style rally usually runs in late summer/autumn — dates shift yearly. Outside rally week the plain returns to total silence, which is rather the point.
