Chaqchan (c. 1370) is among the oldest mosques in the region — a Kashmiri-Tibetan timber masterpiece in Khaplu whose tiered pagoda form and carved interiors predate almost everything standing in the north. It remains a living mosque: modest dress, quiet voices, and non-prayer-time visits.
The building resolves an architectural argument older than borders: pagoda silhouette, Islamic geometry, Kashmiri walnut carving — one roof over all three. Restoration kept the patina; the 650-year-old columns still smell faintly of cedar oil after rain.
In Khaplu town, 10 min from the palace. Every SafarGB Khaplu stay includes a guided visit timed between prayers.
